Happy New Year!

The beginning of the fall semester always feels like the turning of the year to instructors, Distance Learning Center staff, and perhaps to students. It’s a time when there’s a lot of anticipation of the new activities to come. I hope you’re now enrolled in the courses you need to move forward toward your degree, and that you’re looking forward to beginning your academic work.

Remember to connect with your instructor during the first week of classes, through Learn@UW-Superior or e-mail, to confirm your participation in the class. It’s important to make that connection.

I’m happy to announce that our enrollments have once again increased over our numbers of a year ago. Thank you for letting others know about our program.

Credit Card Payment Returns
Possibly the best news of the new term is that the university will once again be able to accept tuition and fee payments using a credit card. Watch the Bursar’s Office website at https://mail.uwsuper.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.uwsuper.edu/bursar or your E-Hive for details.

Notes for New Students
Some things you’ll want to do as your start your academic career:
· Make sure you’ve filed the Overpayment Authorization Form for processing of your financial aid. The form is available at https://mail.uwsuper.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.uwsuper.edu/bursar/pdf/Overpayment%2520Authorization%2520Form2.pdf
· Visit your online courses as soon as possible at https://mail.uwsuper.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://uwsuper.courses.wisconsin.edu. Click on the + sign to expand your course list.
· Stop by the Cyber CafĂ© Rest Area to meet Melissa Crow, our peer mentor, and say hello to your fellow students

…and for Continuing Students
For those of you planning to graduate this term:
· Individually Designed Majors need to be approved…make sure yours is complete…contact your advisor ASAP if it’s still in process.
· Make sure your Application for Graduation is filed by October 15th – it’s now done through the E-Hive – and your $35 graduation fee paid.

E-Hive Help
If you have any problems with E-Hive, remember, you have a help link in the E-Hive log-in page, called “Student E-Hive Help” (look in the box titled “Technology Help” for the link). This great resource can answer pretty much any question you have about E-Hive.

Relax a Bit
As we start the holiday that traditionally ends the summer, I hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Deb and I spent last weekend canoeing and camping with friends on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage near Mercer. Here’s a photo to remind you what a great place Northern Wisconsin is to live and enjoy.

Important Dates

Monday, September 15th - last day to drop classes for a full refund and without $18 fee

Welcome to New Advisors

Please welcome Jim Shelquist and Johanna Garrison to the Distance Learning Center staff. Jim will serve as Outreach Specialist and will oversee many of our student services as well as our regional information sessions and participation in adult learner events. Jim has been teaching in our Communicating Arts major for several years, and previously taught in the English department on campus. Johanna comes to us from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where she has been a faculty member in the Social Work department. She will serve as Instructional Program Manager, overseeing our course and program development, course revision, and instructional quality assurance processes. Both Jim and Johanna will be advisors and will advise students previously advised by Sharon Lavine and Barbara Doherty, as well as those students advised by Ron Harshman and Cathy Pulkinen not yet been admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Watch your e-mail for a message from your new advisor soon.

Recent articles in national publications have described a growing public interest in online and other forms of distance learning as the cost of travel rises. Perhaps you know someone who is thinking of completing a degree or going back to school for some professional improvement. Help them to learn about the UW-Superior Distance Learning Center by giving them our web address - www.uwsuper.edu/distancelearning - our e-mail - dlc@uwsuper.edu - and our toll-free number, 877-528-6597. Advisor Transition Update

Here at the Distance Learning Center, we're about to complete our search process for two new program advisors. We ask our applicants to make presentations related to the position they're seeking. Our most recent presentations, by candidates for the position overseeing our instructional programs as well as advising, were recorded and may be viewed as streaming video. Follow these links to see presentations on "Key elements in designing and delivering a quality distance learning program."

Dr. Johanna Garrison - http://apps.uwsuper.edu:8080/asxgen/DLC/Garrison.wmv

Ms. Karen Plass - http://apps.uwsuper.edu:8080/asxgen/DLC/Plass.wmv

Dr. Mary Menzel - http://apps.uwsuper.edu:8080/asxgen/DLC/Menzel.wmv

Mr. Erik Birkeland - http://apps.uwsuper.edu:8080/asxgen/DLC/Birkeland.wmv

Thanks to Juliet Means for suggesting this method to provide you a chance to see the candidates, and to Tom Tu and Savannah Smith of our staff for making the videos.

With this staffing transition also comes a change in advising practice. Students pursuing the Elementary Education Degree will be advised by faculty in our Teacher Education department once they have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Ron Harshman's and Cathy Pulkinen's advisees in this category have recently been assigned Teacher Education advisors. I'm also pleased to announce that Cathy will be joining the faculty of Teacher Education this fall and may soon be teaching in the online program.

We'll keep you informed by e-mail, including this newsletter, as changes occur and new staff join our program.

Website Improvements Underway

A substantially revamped version of the Distance Learning Center website will soon be unveiled. You should find the updated site easier to navigate and locate information and forms you need. To help us finish our edits and improvements, please reply to this e-mail to let me know: what changes to the website would make it more helpful for you? I'll appreciate your feedback.

Advisor Transition

I've mentioned previously that several of our advisors are retiring this summer. Barbara Doherty retires June 30th and we expect to announce her replacement soon. In the meantime, her advisees should contact her next week to finish up any unfinished fall advising or to just wish her well in her next career. Ron Harshman and Sharon Lavine will conclude their advising at the end of August and we expect to have their advisees reassigned by mid-August. Advisees will be notified by e-mail of your new advisor's name and contact information.

Our support course for students is back with a new name for summer. The Cyber Cafe Rest Area is a place where you can meet fellow students and post questions about Distance Learning. Melissa Crow is again serving as our student peer mentor. Melissa will be happy to share her experience as a distance learner and help you find answers to your questions. We're now enrolling all students in the course, so you'll see it among your courses if you're enrolled for Summer College. Be sure to visit and leave a question or a comment in one of the discussions.

Learn@UW-Superior Upgrade
Learn@UW-Superior will be unavailable until Tuesday, May 27th due to a systemwide upgrade. When you return to your online courses, you'll find some changes in the look and location of some functions. Check the online Student Guide link on the login page if you need help in navigating the updated system.

Advisor Retirements
Most of you have heard that Barbara Doherty, Ron Harshman, and Sharon Lavine will be retiring in the next several months. Each of these dedicated advisors has worked with adult learners at UW-Superior for nearly 30 years. Please join me in thanking them for their service. If you'd like to share a memory or two, send me a note.

The process is well underway for hiring new advisors for the center. I'll let you know as these new advisors join us this summer.

Remember that your grades are posted in My E-Hive...they'll be available after Memorial Day. Congratulations on your academic progress.

Last call for first summer session, and time to act for fall! If you haven't completed advising and registration, make your advising appointment today.

Check Your Summer Course Schedule
It's important to remember that Summer College courses don't all start on May 19th. Many courses start in June, and others in July. The start and end dates for each course are listed in the schedule. Make a note!

Learn@UW-Superior Outage

Learn@UW-Superior will be unavailable over the Memorial Day weekend for an important system upgrade. The outage will last from 8 PM Thursday, May 22nd through Tuesday, May 27th. Please plan your summer course activities around this outage. The scheduling is certainly inconvenient, but this time period was the preference of the majority of UW System campuses.

Congratulations to our Graduates!
Twenty-five of you will graduate Saturday - one of our largest groups in years. Those of you who will cross the stage can relax for a moment and reflect on your accomplishments. You've come a long way indeed.

Be sure to join us before the ceremony for the group photo at 1:10 PM. Look for the Distance Learning sign near the student lineup area.

Scholarship Update

Last week I sent you information on scholarships, and a number of you have submitted applications. I've since learned that the website still shows last year's criteria, and some changes have not been added. I will let you know when the updated criteria are posted, as well as the reasons behind the changes. If you are considering applying but haven't yet, please wait for the new criteria. The deadline is June 6th, so you have some time.

Graduation

It's exciting to think that graduation is only a few weeks away. We have a large group of graduates this spring. We look forward to seeing many of you in Superior for the ceremony, and invite you to join us for our faculty/staff/student photo outside Wessman Arena just before the event. Once again we'll also have a virtual graduation through the Distance Learning website.

Support for New Students Course

One last reminder to this term's new students that the Support for New Students course is available as a place where you can get answers to questions from our peer mentor, Melissa Crow. Please take advantage of this support system when you aren't sure about anything involving the program. Next fall we plan to expand this course to make it available for all students.

A Snow Day in April

Today I'm writing again from my living room in Lake Nebagamon. Many of you are also at home due to the blizzard that's forging its way across the Midwest. It's certainly handy to have online access on days like this - I have some homework of my own to do. If you're in the same situation, I hope you find today a chance to get some quiet time to catch up on your classes.

Direct Access to Learn@UW-Superior

Due to a power outage in Superior, the UW-Superior webserver has been off line this morning. Since Learn@UW-Superior operates on a server in Madison, you still have access if you use the direct address: http://uwsuper.courses.wisconsin.edu/. If you ever have access problems, try that address first.

More Student Regent News

Not one, not two, not three, but four UW-Superior students have been applicants for the non-traditional student regent position. December Dickerson recently notified me that she also is a candidate for this role. Best of luck to all applicants. We should hear soon who has been selected.

Find Us On Facebook

There's now a UW-Superior Distance Learning Students group at www.facebook.com. If you are a Facebook user, we hope you'll join in. If you aren't, you may be interested in signing up, now or in the future.

Summer and Fall Course Registration

Advisement and registration for both Summer and Fall 2008 begins April 14th. The class schedule for both terms is available online. It is updated nightly so that you will have the most accurate and updated listing every time you log on.The following are some important reminders:

1) If you did not enroll for courses this Spring Semester, you will need to complete a Re-entry Application to enroll. You can download the form from www.uwsuper.edu/distancelearning/forms

2) You'll enroll in your courses on-line, using your E- Hive account. For step-by-step instructions on how to enroll, go to www.uwsuper.edu/distancelearning/registration and click on "How to Register for Courses".

3) An enrollment conference with your advisor is required before you can register. Contact your advisor either by email or phone to schedule your enrollment conference. During your conference, let your advisor know which classes you would like to take. Once approved, your advisor will lift the hold on your record and you can register.

4) Check your E-Hive account for your enrollment appointment. All students have a certain time assigned to them in which they can register. To find out your time, log into your E-Hive account. In the Enrollment box click on “view enrollment appointment”.

5) Enrollment is limited. Don't delay in getting registered. Many Distance Learning courses fill up early!
